How to add Comment Policy on Blog

Receiving comments from readers is the most enjoyable thing for a blogger because it means the articles he wrote are read by other people. Furthermore, comments from readers are a sign that your article is getting their attention. However, many bloggers use the comments column as a place to post links or spam or to generate toxic backlinks. How to deal with comments that are irrelevant and contain active links? It's actually easy. You just need to enable comment moderation in Blogger settings. But I'm not discussing that. I have a more "wise" way where readers will be warned about the comment policy on your blog.

What is a Comment Policy?

The comment policy is a statement regarding the rules for commenting on your blog. For example, you set a rule that comments received on your blog are comments that are directly relevant to your article and you reject and delete irrelevant comments or comments that contain active links without prior notice.

That is an example of a comment policy that you can put on your blog. You can create a page about the comment policy but usually blog visitors don't really care about the policy page. The good news, you can put your comment policy right above the comment field. Thus, readers who want to comment can read the comments policy on your blog before they write their comments.

By placing a comment policy between the article and the comment section, you are playing fair. That is, you can delete comments that do not comply with the comments policy on your blog without guilt.

How to add a comment policy on blog?

Writing a comment policy at the end of every article is certainly not very practical. You can actually put it in the sidebar or blog footer but, believe me, the readers won't see that. Even if they saw it, they would think it was an advertisement.

All you have to do to put a comment policy on your blog is to add it in your blogger template right in the comments section. But you may not know where it is, right?

Follow these steps to add a comment policy on your blog:

  1. Prepare your comment policy statement. I suggest that you make it in one paragraph only. Use paragraph tags to enclose your comment policy. Example: <p>your comment policy.</p>
  2. Open your article, whether it has been commented on or not.
  3. Find the section where the comment or comment box can be found. Usually, there is a section near the end of your blog page.
  4. Right-click the section and select Inspect. This will tell you the class or id of the section. If you have found the class name from the comments section, copy the class name. Mine are comments-threaded (for articles that have been commented on) and comments-non-threaded (for articles that have not been commented on). You got to find yours in both commented and not commented (yet) articles.

  5. Open your blogger dashboard and choose a theme, customize it, and edit HTML. You will see the HTML code of your blogger theme.

  6. Find the class name of the comment section in the HTML code. Use CTRL+F to find it. However, you will find more than one result. The result shown at the beginning of the search is the style for the section that has the class name. You should find the class name at the very bottom of the HTML code.

  7. Paste your comment policy just below the section that has the class name.
  8. Save changes.

I don't know if all blogger templates give the same class name to the comments section. You have to find it in your own blogger template. You should do this because this, IMHO, is one of the best blogging practice to ensure not only the quality of your blog but also your blog security.

After you have done the steps above, please check whether your comment policy has appeared on every article and page just above the comment column. If you're having trouble, leave a comment below. Don't forget to read my comment policy.

Please, only relevant comments are accepted. Comments that are irrelevant and/or containing active links will be deleted. Thank you.

  1. That's a really nice post. These days people often flood the blogs with links on comments, hence it is very essential to have a Comment policy. i didn't had an idea of this but thanks that you thought of sharing it with everyone. However, I will share this with ROI High, who handle my blogs and it's writeups. Will ask them to add a blog commenting policy to all my 4 existing blogs.
